What are the differences between Anti Viruses and Anti Malware and why you probably need an anti-malware on your system to be fully protected? For terminologies sake, a virus is a type of malware. So all of the malware is out there. Trojans Worms exploits adware spyware all of those are considered a type of malware and viruses as you traditionally heard that’s a kind of malware. So, in the 90s, when viruses were more common, viruses Trojan Worms companies came out with antiviruses.
The industry was using to say is a virus, that’s what everyone was hearing. Even to this day, people know this term as it is very well and commonly referred way of saying all my computer has a virus. So that’s why there is a lot of antivirus software that has been developed over the years to handle the traditional viruses worms and Trojans that come from l, like the 90s and 2000s.
Where they were traditionally forms of software that would infect your computer by usually executing a software such as opening an email attachment or running a piece of software in your computer inadvertently which would then infect your computer and try to spread the viruses to other systems and what not so that’s a traditional virus and we have a lot of anti-viruses out there. These can do that, but important to note that if you are using Windows 7, 8 or 10, there is already built-in antivirus such as in Windows 10.
Windows Defender is a pretty good antivirus and you know, windows updates automatically update those definitions for the most recent viruses and whatnot. That helps with like its mentioned, a common way to catch a virus on your computer is sometimes, when you are executing an attachment in an email that maybe, you don’t recognize the attachment and it anyways maybe you can get infected with the virus.
That way now, and more recently they have had a new class of antivirus software called Anti-malware and that tends to focus on different kinds of malware. More like exploits adware spyware and types of malware that you tend to get from browsing the internet for example if you are just browsing you are surfing around and you know you go to a website.
Where it may be that infects your browser with some spyware, so that is an example of something that may be a piece of anti-malware could pick up in real-time and prevent from infecting your system. And, that is why most people tend to have an anti-virus because they have got you. Windows has one by default, that’s enabled but anti-malware is something that you have to install.
And, though there is a little bit of anti-malware functionality in Windows Defender Software like for example – Malwarebytes. Which I am going to show you soon has focused on those kinds of malware and generally is more successful at preventing and removing that class of types of malware compared to an anti-virus. So, I am just going to show you briefly how you know that you have Windows Defender running on Windows 10.
After moving to the home menu and then going to start menu, click on Settings. Then under update and security, go to the windows security tab and then open Windows Defender and Security Center and if you have the green checkmark that means that you have got Windows Defender running as operating in that you have got an anti-virus that’s running.
If you have another third-party antivirus that’s installed usually what happens is Windows 10 will like disable Windows Defender and let your other antivirus take over and you would still get as many like green checkbox there as long as Windows detects that you have a functional antivirus. What Is Anti-Malware?
These days people seem to use words like malware and spyware a lot more than a virus. Making the latter conjure memories of windows 95. The black hats programming them have things like login keystrokes to steal your financial data and attacking corporate network as a destructive form of protests are just the tip of the iceberg.
So, what you can do, well even though modern viruses tend to spread over the internet, unlike the old days, where they were mostly spread around bypassing corrupted floppy disks and flash drives around. What has not changed is the importance of having strong up-to-date antivirus software installed to help prevent accidental exposure after all. When the risk of viral infection is on the line you always want to make sure you are using protection.
Anti-Malware vs. Antivirus?
In a perfect world, there would be no viruses or other diseases and no one would ever get sick. But, since little nasties that make you feel lousy to do exist, prevention seems like a pretty good idea. Doesn’t it? Now for people, the solutions are pretty well established but online it’s not always so clear. Computer nasties can be hidden in links downloaded files and even pop-ups or other advertisements. So, you will need software to protect yourself.
But, how do you know which one most internet security companies try to market their service as one of the two things? Antivirus or Anti-Malware. Malware is just any software that’s a smell or bad so what did viruses just be a subset of that what gives. Let’s think of security software as people and viruses as music or something an anti-virus program would be kind of like your dad.

How do you determine which one you should use? The answer is both. If you have heard that running two security programs simultaneously is bad for true performance and if you use both a real-time scanning antivirus and anti-malware program at the same time that could slow down your PC and can even cause conflicts between the two program scans.
Functions know the trick is to run an active anti-virus scanner that serves as a catch-all and have an on-demand anti-malware program that you can run full scans with periodically or when you notice a change in your computer’s performance. But, how should you determine which programme use well?
The answer and this is a bit of a cop-out but, it’s true is to do your research at the time you are getting it. Watch out for paid options that are redundant or only applicable in a setting with multiple simultaneous users like in small business and check out the latest reports on the effectiveness of the various softwares out there.
Because they are changing relative to each other all the time. The good news is that there a ton of awesome antivirus and anti-malware services out there and though this may surprise of the less tech-savvy readers. Free does not equal bad when it comes to these services.
