Why US (& Google) Banned Huawei? No More Android In Huawei Phone?
So, right now it’s not a good time to own a Huawei Smartphones just the other week, President Donald Trump announced the bad news for Huawei fans. The answer to the only question Huawei fans are looking for is – Why US and Google banned this Chinese multinational telecommunications equipment and consumer electronics manufacturer, headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China. Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. was founded in 1987 by Ren Zhengfei, a former People’s Liberation Army officer.
But on 20th May 2019, The Verge covered the headlines that “Google pulls Huawei’s Android License.” Moreover, the only good news right now says – the US eases some restrictions on China’s Huawei, reportedly halting Google’s plans to cut access. Thus, in other words, US delays Huawei ban for 90 days, its Android license is temporarily back. Is it because, Google services are banned in China, that’s why Chinese company smartphone is banned in the United States? Let’s know the exact reason.
Why Huawei fell under that blacklist? A list that prevents American companies from working with specific foreign subsidiaries. We already knew Huawei was banned from the United States. This has been going for quite some time now. But the big deal though is that Google just came out the other night saying they are no longer providing services to Huawei. This has huge implications. Implications potentially destroy the company. They are reporting that Huawei could potentially lose upto 11 billion dollars, not having access to the Google Play Store and Google apps like YouTube, Google Maps will completely crush Huawei Smartphones.
Now, if you are in China, this is not a big deal, because Google Services are banned in that country. But, everywhere else in the world including here in India, this is a big deal. Now, if you are a current owner of Huawei Phone P30 pro, P20 etc. you don’t have that much concern right now, you will continue to receive security updates. But you might not see future updates to major Android releases like Android Q or any future release. Now the report does say that Huawei is still allowed to use the Android Open Source Project and that is fine.
They can continue using Android, but Google is moving away from that and they are working closer and closer with OEMs to provide a better experience. And, this means while we would be left in the dust every time a new version of Android came out, and how is Huawei going to sell a phone without the Google Play Store. Now, Huawei has been preparing for this. They do have their operating system as a plan B. In case this ever happened with it did and they might release that.
But the potential problem with another operating system is gaining developer support. We have seen this done before by Amazon and Fire OS a Fork of Android. Which did not succeed at all? We have seen this with Windows Phone, a beautiful operating system that ran smooth and fluid and it did not gain any app developer support and it completely died off. If Huawei has to use their operating system, it might succeed in countries like China or on lower-end budget devices.
But, this is not going fare well in bigger markets or more expensive markets like Europe and North America. Now, this could get resolved at some point we don’t know when we are just getting started in a very nasty trade war on and on top of that even if it gets resolved sometime, in the foreseeable future, how confident our consumer is going to be. And, purchasing a Huawei or maybe even a Chinese Smartphone President Trump is a very unpredictable character and he can ban Chinse products whenever he wants or whenever he feels like.
Plus, what about other companies like Microsoft? Are they going to follow in Google’s footsteps and ban Huawei as well that would essentially mean no more updates on Windows, Laptops and no more futures makes running Windows would have to rent something else like Linux or Huawei’s brand new operating system? So, here’s the bottom line – If you are planning on buying a Huawei smartphone and hold off for the next little while because we don’t know exactly what’s going to happen if you have a Huawei smartphone right now.
Don’t freak out, the Play Store is not being removed, you still have access to all the Google Apps and you will continue to receive security updates. You just might not get the next version of Android. Only if the situation is not resolved by then. If you are a consumer, this is a sad day for all of us because quite frankly that’s less competition on the market. It also potentially means other companies like Samsung and Apple might not feel the need to innovate as fast as they were before.
Hopefully, the situation gets resolved, and hopefully while we continue to be a player. Because let’s face it, they make great smartphone and a lot of us out there like their technology, especially the Cameras, the Design and the overall experience it provides.
When Can The Ban Be Lifted?
Huawei was banned by the US government and the internet right now is full of memes, images, texts and videos about it. But also, there is a lot of misinformation on this topic. US President Donald Trump effectively ban Chinese telecommunications firms from doing business with American Companies and it’s going to impact both the nations and the global tech industry.
Huawei has been added to the so-called Entity List and this prevents it from buying parts of Technology for me as suppliers without government approval. As it’s equipment is considered potential tools for Chinese espionage. SETI was previously added to the entity list and the manufacturer suffered greatly as a result as it was forced to hold all the sales of many phones.
But said, SETI doesn’t make its chipsets and components. Huawei has its own chip company called High Silicon and they said it has long been prepared for this eventuality. Even though Huawei has their Chips at the facility and High Silicon produces chipsets and modems for many Huawei phones including all of its flagship and mid-range models. They still make use of the Chipsets from US companies and some low-end phones and all of its laptops. So, the imagination that Intel would also stop working with Huawei could have a big impact on their super fast-growing notebook business as well.
Beside Intel also, Qualcomm is working on the very powerful Snapdragon Chipset for Laptops but they are based in the US as well. Now, besides these Huawei issues also this bans effects software science to comply with the law. Google had to take away, Huawei Android license which was given in 2009. Huawei trying to OHA (Open Handset Alliance) as part of its efforts was to promote a unified Android platform. OAH members are contractually forbidden from producing devices that are based on incompatible Forks of Android. But now if the ban, this has changed, and that’s not a good thing.
There have been rumours about Huawei Operating System. Even earlier around the release of the OS, Huawei mate book X pro is there. But, back at this time, Huawei insisted to cooperate with Microsoft. Even back at the time Huawei already knew that this ban may come one day and this was also the time where Huawei started to poached her a cloud service and build a big ecosystem around the products.
Huawei, which is the world’s second-largest smartphone vendor right now based on shipments and said that it will continue to develop a safe software ecosystem for its customer across the globe. So that means that Huawei will also extend the support to Honor – a brand of smartphones which it owns and until this operating system is ready to deploy, Huawei could rely on AOSP now. AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project and it is the open-source version of Android.
The main difference is that it comes stripped off Google Mobile Services which is a package for Google Services such as the Google Play Store, Gmail and YouTube. But, that’s just needed as an alternative until Huawei has released their Operating system which they have built in the case of an emergency.
Also this is only a problem for the newly released Huawei devices like the new-made series which is upcoming because smartphones available right now, like the P30 series will receive all the updates as Google said it looks like Huawei has prepared a software for this event and this also has been shown by the big efforts in the last years of building their own Huawei cloud services in addition to Android. The US government’s move has seen Intel Qualcomm ceilings and Broadcom reportedly paused supplying chips to Huawei until a resolution has been reached.
But, this band also has negative impacts for the US Apple’s, Intel’s and Qualcomm’s business could be impacted in the future in China as they are both US companies. However, the Chinese smartphone vendors also heavily rely on Qualcomm chipsets and if China bans or increases the tax on Qualcomm, it also will not good for the Chinese companies.
So, banning Huawei from buying components or software from the US companies would surely impact Huawei’s Global Business and also impact the oval industry as well Huawei is buying more than eleven billion dollars in goods and services from the US companies each year. And, also for the P30 series, they bought enough materials to fit the demand.
But, right now we don’t know what’s going to have in the future but we do know one thing for sure. It will also make the US suppliers suffer. But what about 5G? It looked like this and the fast growth of Huawei – the second-biggest smartphone maker has affected this ban. Now the main thing is that always 5G equipment is very affordable. So, while the US could use products from other Vendors does usually have the highest cost.
There are two other really big players in the space. There are Erricson and Nokia and they are not American companies either. But not subject to the same sanctions. It’s really weird even though Nokia Smartphones are produced by Agent Lee Goebbels Factory and supplier Foxconn in China. However, the relationship between Maori and countries in Europe is stable. But, there is a possibility that in the future, more countries could join the US ban and also Australia has banned Huawei’s 5G equipment.
But at this stage, I don’t think that any big European country would ban Huawei as its 5G solutions. A way cheaper and competitive compared to other players. Although guys, it’s a big mess for the whole tech industry and a really sad day for the mobile industry. And, it’s also really sad to see politics can slow down innovation and technical growth. All around the globe, so that was basically in a nutshell, what happened and what will probably happen in the future.
But, if you look into the past, almost the same ban happened to SETI. Now, SETI is a big telecommunications company and they also do smartphones and when that ban hit them, actually they had to go out of business for some reasons. First of all, it’s a way smaller company than Huawei, but still a big company. Now 25$ of their parts of the smartphone’s came from the US that’s really a lot and also they could not push any security updates.
